Oil and Pastel Paintings

A portrait is a family heirloom. We cherish our photographs of our loved ones, but a painting reaches deeper than a camera’s eye. However, in so saying, photographs are useful when it isn’t possible to do a live sitting. These instances can include a client’s busy schedule: or in the case of young children who may find it difficult to sit for extended periods; or in the case of a posthumous portrait; an/or if the portrait is to be a surprise.

I am careful to build the portrait taking measurements from photographs submitted (at least 3 photos please). I do not copy the photographs submitted, but use it as a reference taking measurements and information of the subject and their dress. Upon receipt of your photographs, we will discuss which photograph you prefer. All photographs provided will be returned to you when the portrait is complete. Along with the photographs, it is beneficial to know the location where you will be hanging the painting and if there are any colors in your décor you would like to be included in the painting.

In the case of a live sitting I do a color sketch and take several photographs to use as a reference in working on the painting. Please allow for two hours for the initial sitting. There is also an additional sitting to be sure that the client is pleased with the progress of the painting.

A 45% deposit is required before the portrait is started with the balance due upon acceptance of the portrait. The artist reserves the right to refuse a portrait request if the photographs are not suitable.

Prices are for unframed work. However, I would be happy to assist you in selecting a frame that would complement the décor where the painting will be placed.

Pricing for a portrait of one individual in oil or pastels is as follows:

Face and Head - $500.00

Face, Head, and Shoulders - $850.00

Face, Head, Torso, Arms, and Hands - $1500.00

For full figure portraits, multiple individuals in a painting, or other considerations, pricing will be discussed between the client and the artist.
